About the role#
Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. is hiring for a Summer 2027 internship within our Heavy Movable Structures team. This full-time, on-site role is based in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. You will work on projects involving movable bridges, rail transit systems, locks, dams, ferry terminals, and cranes. This position combines office-based design and analysis with significant time in the field.
What you'll do#
- Inspect machinery at bridge sites to determine the physical condition, alignment, and wear of components like gears, brakes, bearings, and hydraulic systems.
- Prepare written reports, verify data, and create figures and tables.
- Calculate bridge balance for new construction or rehabilitation projects.
- Perform bridge balance testing, including the application of strain gages and data collection.
- Participate in design engineering for heavy movable structure projects using CAD and other software tools.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor’s or graduate program in mechanical engineering or a related field, with excellent academic standing.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, adapt to changing demands, and maintain high attention to detail.
- Strong verbal, graphical, and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated leadership, integrity, and a strong work ethic.
- Enthusiasm for problem-solving and curiosity about how mechanical systems function.
- Ability to perform inspections of buildings and structures, read construction drawings, and record data clearly.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 lbs and work in outdoor temperature extremes.
- Ability to travel and attend meetings at various office, field, and construction sites.
- Ability to safely work at heights and operate access equipment like ladders, scaffolds, and lifts.
- Must be medically fit to use respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment.
- Ability to drive and safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to work in occupationally hazardous locations and follow safety training.
