    About the role#

    Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. is hiring for a Summer 2027 Fire Protection Engineering Intern. This is a full-time, paid position based on-site. You will work alongside industry experts to apply your academic knowledge to real-world problems in the built environment. Our Fire Protection Engineering group focuses on fire protection systems, life safety, building codes, and performance evaluations for both new and existing structures.

    What you'll do#

    • Assist project teams with on-site investigations, condition assessments, and inspections.
    • Survey and document distress, collect data and samples, and perform field testing.
    • Prepare site visit reports and organize field data.
    • Research modern and historic construction documents, building codes, and design guidelines.
    • Perform analysis of fire protection systems or building code issues under the guidance of licensed professionals.
    • Assist with the preparation of client deliverables, including construction documents, specifications, and written reports.
    • Contribute to in-house technical research projects.

    What you'll need#

    • Current student in a bachelor’s or graduate program in fire protection engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field from an accredited program.
    • Junior or senior standing with excellent academic performance.
    • Focused interest in fire protection and life safety objectives.
    • Demonstrated leadership skills, integrity, and a strong work ethic.
    • Effective verbal, graphical, and written communication skills.
    • Enthusiasm for solving problems in the built world and curiosity about how things work.
    • Ability to perform field work, which may include lifting up to 50 lbs, working at heights, using ladders or scaffolds, and working in temperature extremes.
    • Ability to travel and operate a motor vehicle.

    • Locations: Chicago, IL; Northbrook, IL; Dallas, TX; San Antonio, TX; San Diego, CA.
    • Term: Summer 2027.
    • Work modality: On-site.
    • Compensation: $17.00 - $35.00 per hour.
