    About the role#

    The ACLU of Northern California Legal Advocacy Department offers an externship focused on democracy, speech, and technology. You will work alongside attorneys to protect privacy, free speech, and open government. This role involves both litigation and policy work. You will gain exposure to how legal strategies are formed and executed within the organization.

    What you'll do#

    • Conduct legal and policy research and analysis.
    • Help write reports, advocacy materials, and court documents.
    • Assist with local or legislative campaigns.
    • Attend public hearings, meetings with policy-makers, and court proceedings when possible.
    • Participate in departmental meetings to discuss ongoing litigation and policy strategies.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment in law school or a graduate program in a related field, such as Political Science, Journalism, Public Health, Computer Science, Environmental Engineering, or Communications.
    • A strong interest in civil liberties and free speech.
    • Solid research, writing, and oral communication skills.
    • You are creative, detail-oriented, and enthusiastic about social justice.
    • Ability to work with intensity and focus.

    Location & details#

    • Location: San Francisco, California.
    • Modality: Remote, on-site, or hybrid options are available for students near our offices. Remote work is available for students outside these areas.
    • Status: This is a paid, full-time externship for the Spring 2027 term.
