About the role#
The Metropolitan Water District’s Water Quality Section is hiring a Chemistry Co-Op Student Intern to join the Chemistry Compliance Team. You will work under the guidance of professional chemists to gain hands-on experience in a laboratory setting. This role requires a commitment of 12 to 20 hours per week during the academic year, with the possibility of expanding to 40 hours per week during the summer.
What you'll do#
- Provide technical support in the chemistry compliance laboratory.
- Assist with sample preparation and water quality testing.
- Manage data entry and recordkeeping using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Perform routine laboratory quality control activities.
- Maintain general laboratory cleanliness and organization.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited four-year degree program in Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, or a related science major.
- Sophomore or junior status with approximately two years remaining before graduation.
- Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 in relevant coursework such as chemistry, mathematics, or physics.
- Experience handling chemicals in a laboratory setting.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety practices and general laboratory calculations.
- Familiarity with chemical and physical instrumentation, laboratory measurements, and measurement techniques.
- Proficiency with computer software in a Microsoft Windows environment.
- Strong knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry principles.
- Ability to work as a self-motivated team player with minimal supervision.
Location & details#
- Location: Pomona, California.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Monday through Friday, between 7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Work blocks of at least four hours are preferred.
- Status: Paid, part-time position.
