About the role#
This internship provides a supervised learning opportunity for students building a foundation in electrical engineering, power systems, or data analysis. You will support the Distribution System Grid Planning department by assisting with engineering tasks, research, and data organization. You will work as part of a team that provides technical support for grid resiliency, modernization, and integrated distribution planning.
What you'll do#
- Assist with distribution system studies, such as load flow, voltage, reliability, and time-series analysis.
- Support data collection, validation, and organization for distribution grid load and DER forecasting.
- Maintain planning models, spreadsheets, maps, dashboards, and technical documentation.
- Analyze infrastructure interdependencies related to thermal, voltage, and reliability criteria.
- Evaluate traditional utility solutions and non-wires alternatives.
- Research industry practices, emerging technologies, and grid modernization strategies.
- Participate in team meetings, technical discussions, and field or office learning opportunities.
- Develop technical communication skills by creating summaries and presentations of your work.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Data Analytics, or a related technical discipline.
- Graduation date of Spring 2028 or later.
- Minimum 3.0 GPA.
- Interest in electric power systems, utility infrastructure, distribution planning, renewable energy, or grid modernization.
- Foundational understanding of engineering principles, mathematics, and data analysis.
- Ability to interpret technical information, ask questions, and apply feedback.
- Strong planning, organizational, and time management skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Dedication to continuous improvement, safety, and professional development.

- Location: Richmond, Virginia.
- Work Modality: Hybrid (one week in office, one week teleworking).
- Status: Paid, full-time internship.
