About the role#
The Dr. Jane Huffman Wildlife Genetics Institute is looking for student workers to join our vector borne disease laboratory. You will support research by testing ticks for disease agents and assisting with field collections. This role involves a variety of laboratory tasks and requires occasional evening or weekend work.
What you'll do#
- Identify ticks and test them for pathogens.
- Travel to field sites to collect samples.
- Handle, identify, and store samples.
- Assist with DNA extractions, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and gel electrophoresis.
- Help with qPCR sample testing.
- Measure compounds and prepare solutions.
- Clean and calibrate scientific equipment.
- Input, analyze, and interpret research data.
- Follow all laboratory safety procedures and standards of practice.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment at ESU as a bachelor or graduate student in biological sciences or a related field.
- A minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
- Ability to work well in both small and large teams.
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- High attention to detail and deductive reasoning.
- A self-motivated and independent work ethic.
- Understanding of DNA extraction and PCR techniques is preferred.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Ability to read and write English.

- Location: Pennsylvania, United States.
- Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: 20 hours per week.
- Term: Rolling.
- Compensation: $12.00 per hour.
- Requirements: Employment is contingent upon passing a background check, including FBI fingerprinting and PA Child Abuse clearance.
