    About the role#

    The National Renewable Energy Laboratory is seeking a graduate intern for the Fall 2026 term. This role focuses on the design and optimization of distributed hybrid energy systems, specifically those involving chemical end-uses like ammonia. You will work within a research environment to integrate generation, storage, and distribution technologies.

    What you'll do#

    • Design and optimize distributed hybrid energy systems to determine technical and economic viability.
    • Run simulations and system optimizations using tools such as H2Integrate.
    • Deploy scalable strategies for varying hybrid plant sizes in real-time.
    • Help publish research results in technical journals and conference proceedings.
    • Support the development of new work proposals, preparations, and reviews.

    What you'll need#

    • Enrollment as a full-time student in a master’s degree program at an accredited institution.
    • A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
    • Experience with distributed hybrid energy system design.
    • Experience modeling chemical processes, such as ammonia.
    • Proficiency in Python programming.
    • Academic background in Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Data Science, or Mathematics.

    Location & details#

    • This position is based in Boulder, Colorado, with both remote and on-site work options available.
    • This is a full-time, paid internship for the Fall 2026 term.
    • Please note that this position does not offer visa sponsorship.
