About the role#
The Falkirk Mining Company offers an internship program for students currently pursuing a two or four-year degree. This position exposes students to the daily operations of a surface coal mine and the functions of an engineering group. You will work on tasks that support the operation while gaining practical experience. The role is a full-time, paid position available for either a 3-month term from May 2027 to August 2027 or an 8-month term ending in December 2027.
What you'll do#
- Assist the survey crew with office computations and fieldwork using GPS, drones, robotic total stations, or a remote-controlled boat.
- Process engineering and surveying data to create reports or studies.
- Help prepare mining maps and permits.
- Support engineering projects through field oversight and the design of mine roads, ponds, and special projects.
- Participate in groundwater, soil sampling, and geological programs.
- Ensure all work complies with MSHA law, company safety procedures, and state and federal environmental regulations.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited engineering or surveying program with good academic standing.
- Completion of at least one year of college in the field of study with the intent to complete the degree.
- A valid driver's license.
- Ability to provide and wear your own steel-toed shoes.
- Strong computer skills, with experience in Microsoft Office and AutoCAD considered a plus.
- Ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Record check and a Job Function Test.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, including approximately 20% of your time outdoors.
Location & details#
- This position is located on-site in Underwood, North Dakota.
- You must be able to wear required personal protective equipment including safety glasses, a hard hat, face shield, and respirator.
