About the role#
As a Civil Engineer Intern, you will work alongside civil project engineers to execute project work for wind and solar renewable energy, power plants, electrical substations, and heavy industrial facilities. You will collaborate with multi-disciplined teams to apply your academic background to real-world engineering challenges. This position is a full-time, paid internship for Summer 2027 based in Chicago.
What you'll do#
- Prepare engineering calculations, technical specifications, and reports.
- Evaluate mass earthwork cut and fill quantities and site grading layouts.
- Design layouts for stormwater and sanitary drainage systems.
- Assist in the layout of plant roadways and trackwork systems.
- Develop pond and landfill system designs for water and ash management.
- Portray designs in project 3-D models and on design drawings.
- Use automation and AI tools to improve workflows, reduce rework, and solve engineering problems.
What you'll need#
- Expected graduation date in Winter 2027 or Spring 2028 for a BS or MS in Civil Engineering.
- Solid understanding of basic civil and geotechnical engineering concepts.
- Strong organizational skills and high attention to detail.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of software such as Civil 3D, StormCAD, PondPack, MicroStation, or AutoCAD.
- Ability to use programming or scripting tools like Python, MATLAB, or advanced Excel.
- Enrollment in an ABET-accredited program is preferred, as is prior internship or co-op experience.
