About the role#
The Department of Utilities is hiring two Student Assistants to maintain Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data. You will work under a GIS Specialist and collaborate with IT and utility staff. This position provides experience with municipal operations including water, wastewater, and drainage systems.
What you'll do#
- Use ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Pro to enter utility map features and attributes into the ArcGIS Enterprise platform.
- Perform visual interpretation of aerial photos to place water meter locations.
- Digitize geographic map features.
- Review utility engineering plans.
- Use City GPS equipment and mobile devices to geolocate features in the field.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a college or university program in Geography, GIS, Environmental Studies, Engineering, or a related field.
- Basic knowledge of GIS concepts and the ability to use ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS Pro.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans.
- Basic proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to learn new GIS tools and workflows.
Location & details#
- Location: Sacramento, California.
- Work modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Flexible, Monday through Friday between 8 AM and 5 PM.
- Hours: Up to 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours during breaks.
- Compensation: $16.90 to $24.00 per hour.
