About the role#
The Division of Perceptual Studies at the UVA School of Medicine is hiring a graduate Federal Work-Study student to support research on near-death experiences. You will work directly with Dr. Marieta Pehlivanova on an established project examining the characteristics and life impacts of these experiences. This is a part-time role requiring 10 to 20 hours of work per week.
What you'll do#
- Complete training to understand near-death experience research and current protocols.
- Maintain the SPSS database and assist with qualitative coding of participant narratives.
- Build online surveys and help draft protocols for the Institutional Review Board.
- Complete the UVA Institutional Review Board CITI training in research ethics.
- Support basic data analysis tasks.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a UVA graduate student with Federal Work-Study eligibility.
- Academic background in psychology, sociology, neuroscience, or a related field.
- Knowledge of research methods and design within the psychological or social sciences.
- Experience with Microsoft Office, Adobe, Qualtrics, and data software like SPSS or SAS.
- Strong attention to detail and clear communication skills.
Location & details#
- This position is located on-site at the Division of Perceptual Studies office in downtown Charlottesville, Virginia.
- The term runs from August 25, 2026, through May 14, 2027.
- This is a paid, part-time position.
