About the role#
The Geospatial Electric Transmission department at Xcel Energy is hiring a GIS Intern in Minneapolis. This role supports our team through mapping, data preparation, and site analysis. You will work on utility features and maintain databases to help us manage energy infrastructure. This is a paid position starting May 24, 2027.
What you'll do#
- Create, prepare, and maintain GIS layers, applications, and data sets.
- Translate legal land descriptions and Public Land Survey System (PLSS) data into visual maps.
- Assist with suitability modeling and site location analysis.
- Develop data standards and maintenance procedures alongside the GIS team.
- Generate exhibits and landowner lists for project teams.
- Perform database maintenance.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a Junior or higher in an accredited college or university.
- Pursuing a degree in Geography, GIS, Geospatial Science, or Computer Science.
- Completion of GIS I or an equivalent course.
- Experience producing maps using ArcGIS and Adobe Illustrator.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks.

- Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota.
- Schedule: Full-time during the summer and part-time during the school year.
- Modality: Hybrid, with the requirement to commute to the office in-person.
- Term: Summer 2027.
