About the role#
Xcel Energy is hiring a Substation Engineer Intern for the Summer 2027 term. This is a paid, full-time position based in Amarillo or Lubbock, Texas. The role operates on a hybrid schedule, requiring in-person attendance at the designated office.
What you'll do#
- Support substation design tasks including one-line diagrams, layouts, and basic calculations.
- Assist with drawing updates, design packages, and standards documentation.
- Perform basic engineering calculations and data validation.
- Participate in design reviews and coordination meetings.
- Support site visit preparation and documentation.
- Organize and analyze project data and engineering records.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a freshman or higher in an ABET accredited college or university pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Ability to work full-time (up to 40 hours a week) during the summer and part-time (up to 20 hours a week) during the school year.
- Completion of coursework in power systems or electrical engineering fundamentals.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- An interest in electric utility infrastructure or substation engineering.
- Ability to commute to the office in-person.
