    About the role#

    Bascom Hunter is looking for a Firmware Engineering Intern to help develop, integrate, and test low-level software for aerospace and defense electronics. You will work alongside electrical, embedded software, FPGA, and systems engineers. This role involves the full firmware development lifecycle, including hardware bring-up, coding, debugging, and documentation.

    What you'll do#

    • Design, develop, and test firmware for aerospace and defense systems.
    • Write and optimize code using C or C++.
    • Support development for microcontrollers, microprocessors, and FPGAs.
    • Help with board bring-up and hardware initialization.
    • Develop device drivers, bootloaders, and board support packages.
    • Troubleshoot communication protocols like SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, Ethernet, and GPIO.
    • Use laboratory equipment to analyze firmware and hardware interactions.
    • Create test scripts to support automated verification.
    • Participate in design reviews, code reviews, and technical meetings.
    • Maintain technical documentation, including test procedures and design reports.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment in a Bachelor's or Master's program for Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
    • Proficiency in C or C++.
    • A basic understanding of digital electronics, computer architecture, and hardware-software interfaces.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to work independently and within a team.
    • Experience with microcontrollers or embedded devices.
    • Familiarity with FPGA-based systems and interfaces.
    • Knowledge of bare-metal or real-time operating system (RTOS) development.
    • Experience with debugging tools like JTAG, oscilloscopes, or logic analyzers.
    • Familiarity with Git, Linux environments, and Python scripting.
    • Previous experience through internships, research, or project teams.
