About the role#
The Metropolitan Water District’s Water Quality Section is hiring a Chemistry Co-Op Student Intern to join the Chemistry Compliance Team. This is a paid, on-site position. You will work 12 to 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday, between 7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. During the summer, hours may increase to 40 hours per week. We prefer that you schedule your shifts in blocks of at least four hours.
What you'll do#
Working under the guidance of professional chemists, you will provide technical support in the chemistry compliance laboratory. Your tasks include:
- Assisting with sample preparation and water quality testing.
- Performing data entry and recordkeeping in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Conducting routine laboratory quality control activities.
- Maintaining general laboratory cleanliness and organization.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited four-year degree program in Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or a related science major.
- Sophomore or junior status with approximately two years remaining before graduation.
- A minimum overall GPA of 2.5 in relevant coursework such as chemistry, mathematics, or physics.
- Strong knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry principles.
- Experience using computer software in a Microsoft Windows environment.
- Familiarity with laboratory safety practices, chemical handling, and general laboratory calculations is preferred.
