About the role#
This is a 12-week summer internship for a reporter to join our metro team in 2027. You will receive training and mentoring while contributing to our news coverage. You will work alongside editors and senior reporters, often assisting on major breaking news events. This is a full-time position with a typical Monday-to-Friday schedule, though weekend, evening, and holiday work may be required.
What you'll do#
- Report news for SFChronicle.com and print editions.
- Cover stories including city government, policy, neighborhood trends, transit, housing, and breaking news.
- Collaborate with newsroom teams, including photo, video, and data departments.
- Work to provide readers with timely and authoritative information.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program.
- Ability to work quickly, manage your own time, and meet tight deadlines.
- Strong writing skills and a commitment to accuracy and ethics.
- Experience in a newsroom, such as a previous internship, is preferred.
- Ability to develop sources and a drive to chase stories.
- Excellent communication skills and comfort with giving and receiving feedback.
- Relevant coursework in Journalism, Communications, English, or Political Science.
Location & details#
- Location: San Francisco, California.
- Modality: Hybrid, with at least three days per week in the downtown San Francisco office.
- Requirement: Must live in the Bay Area during the internship.
- Compensation: Paid at $20.50 per hour.
