    About the role#

    As an AI/ML research intern, you will explore technical questions at the intersection of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and behavioral science. You will work with engineers and researchers to design experiments, build prototypes, and evaluate new methods. Your contributions will help determine which AI approaches are suitable for integration into products and systems. This role operates in an environment that combines behavioral science with proprietary data.

    What you'll do#

    • Research advances in AI and machine learning to reproduce promising approaches and evaluate their effectiveness.
    • Design and contribute to experiments and prototypes for AI-enabled products.
    • Investigate technical questions related to retrieval systems, model evaluation, and machine learning.
    • Formulate research questions into hypotheses, measurable results, and technical recommendations.
    • Analyze experimental outcomes to identify limitations and unexpected findings.
    • Evaluate new models and tools through hands-on implementation and benchmarking.
    • Document your methods and findings so other team members can build upon your work.
    • Collaborate with technical partners to transition research into practical systems.

    What you'll need#

    • Enrollment in a bachelor’s or graduate degree program in computer science, data science, machine learning, or a related quantitative field.
    • Programming experience in Python relevant to machine learning or data science.
    • Hands-on experience building, training, or evaluating AI systems through research, coursework, or independent projects.
    • Enrollment at a college or university within an 80-mile radius of San Francisco, California.
    • Availability to work 40 hours per week for 12 weeks during the summer of 2027.
    • Experience designing experiments and analyzing quantitative results is preferred.
    • Familiarity with PyTorch, transformer models, or retrieval systems is a plus.
    • Research experience, publications, or open-source contributions are a plus.
    • Anticipated graduation between August 2027 and May 2028 is preferred, though 2029 graduates will be considered.

    Location & details#

    • This is a full-time, paid internship for the summer of 2027.
    • You must be eligible to work in the United States. This position does not provide employment visa sponsorship.
    • You are required to work on-site at the San Francisco office Monday through Thursday, with an option to work remotely on Friday.
    • Compensation is $45 to $50 per hour.
