    About the role#

    The International Rescue Committee is recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice to provide immigration legal services. This internship offers a look at the basics of immigration processes and procedures, including filing applications for adjustment of status, naturalization, and family reunification for refugees, asylees, and immigrants. You will work under the guidance of immigration staff to gain exposure to the challenges and opportunities of nonprofit legal services.

    What you'll do#

    • Assist clients with specific applications and forms related to immigration services.
    • Conduct client intake forms and apply basic interviewing techniques to build trust and gather information.
    • Track, file, and mail relevant documents, applications, and notices of action.
    • Maintain immigration databases and keep clear, accurate case notes.
    • Ensure translation services are provided in languages accessible to clients during intakes and application completions.
    • Assist with special research or other projects as assigned.

    What you'll need#

    • Prior experience or interest in law or providing nonprofit legal services.
    • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
    • Strong writing skills for maintaining accurate case records.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and web-based tools.
    • Fluency in English.
    • Ability to learn new immigration processes quickly.

    Location & details#

    • This internship is based in Baltimore, Maryland.
    • The role is hybrid, involving a mix of office work, remote tasks, and field time.
    • The term runs for 14 weeks, from September 14, 2026, through December 18, 2026.
    • You are expected to work a minimum of 15 hours per week, with at least 3 days spent in the office.
    • This is an unpaid position. Interns are eligible for a per diem reimbursement of $15 per day to offset food and travel costs.
