    About the role#

    This Product Development Engineering Co-op supports the OTTAVA Surgical Robotic Platform. You will work within the Development Engineering organization, collaborating with engineers, technical specialists, manufacturing partners, quality teams, and suppliers. The role focuses on New Product Development (NPD), New Product Introduction (NPI), design transfer, and manufacturing readiness. You will gain hands-on experience in regulated medical device development, design for manufacturability, and cross-functional problem solving.

    What you'll do#

    • Assist internal teams and external suppliers with planning, development, qualification, and stabilization of components, equipment, and manufacturing processes.
    • Support cross-functional collaboration with R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, and Product Management to evaluate design options.
    • Apply principles of Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and Design-to-Cost to assess assembly flow and design robustness.
    • Assist with tolerance stack-up, GD&T review, and basic engineering analysis to support component designs.
    • Prepare technical inputs for design reviews, document risks, and capture action items.
    • Participate in design transfer activities to support the transition from development into manufacturing.
    • Support engineering builds, pilot runs, troubleshooting, root cause investigations, and corrective action follow-up.
    • Assist with PFMEA inputs, process characterization, control strategies, and statistical reviews.
    • Manage project documentation, engineering deliverables, and build readiness materials.

    What you'll need#

    • Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Biomedical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or Manufacturing Engineering.
    • Foundational understanding of mechanical, electro-mechanical, or opto-mechanical design principles.
    • Basic knowledge of 3D CAD tools like SolidWorks or Creo.
    • Exposure to GD&T, engineering drawings, tolerance analysis, or ASME Y14.5 concepts.
    • Strong analytical, problem-solving, documentation, and technical communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently and within a cross-functional team.
