    About the role#

    The Summer Land Management Intern supports the Westervelt Ecological Services Operations Team in Auburn, Alabama. This role provides hands-on experience in ecological restoration, habitat monitoring, stream geomorphology, and land management. You will work across various conservation and mitigation sites, assisting with field tasks and technical documentation.

    What you'll do#

    • Conduct habitat and vegetation monitoring.
    • Assist with hydrological assessments and wildlife sampling.
    • Support invasive species control and prescribed burning activities.
    • Use GPS and GIS tools for mapping and data collection.
    • Analyze field data to contribute to monitoring reports and technical documentation.
    • Perform baseline assessments of stream conditions, including geomorphological measurements.
    • Collaborate with team members, contractors, and landowners.
    • Navigate remote locations for fieldwork using GPS and traditional mapping tools.

    What you'll need#

    • Actively pursuing a degree in forestry, wildlife biology, biology, botany, environmental studies, environmental engineering, ecology, or a related field.
    • Must have completed your sophomore year; summer field camp completion is preferred.
    • Basic knowledge of Southeastern flora and fauna.
    • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word; statistics coursework is preferred.
    • Experience with GIS applications, RiverMorph, surveying, and stream ecology is preferred.
    • Valid driver’s license and the ability to safely operate 4WD vehicles and UTVs.
    • Strong navigation skills using maps, compass, and GPS.
    • Physical fitness to work in challenging terrain and weather conditions.
    • Ability to work independently or in team settings and adapt to dynamic schedules, including overnight travel.

    • Compensation: Paid position ($20/hr for undergraduates, $22/hr for graduate students).
    • Benefits: Housing allowance provided for students who must relocate.
