About the role#
The Summer Land Management Intern supports the Westervelt Ecological Services Operations Team in Auburn, Alabama. This role provides hands-on experience in ecological restoration, habitat monitoring, stream geomorphology, and land management. You will work across various conservation and mitigation sites, assisting with field tasks and technical documentation.
What you'll do#
- Conduct habitat and vegetation monitoring.
- Assist with hydrological assessments and wildlife sampling.
- Support invasive species control and prescribed burning activities.
- Use GPS and GIS tools for mapping and data collection.
- Analyze field data to contribute to monitoring reports and technical documentation.
- Perform baseline assessments of stream conditions, including geomorphological measurements.
- Collaborate with team members, contractors, and landowners.
- Navigate remote locations for fieldwork using GPS and traditional mapping tools.
What you'll need#
- Actively pursuing a degree in forestry, wildlife biology, biology, botany, environmental studies, environmental engineering, ecology, or a related field.
- Must have completed your sophomore year; summer field camp completion is preferred.
- Basic knowledge of Southeastern flora and fauna.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word; statistics coursework is preferred.
- Experience with GIS applications, RiverMorph, surveying, and stream ecology is preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and the ability to safely operate 4WD vehicles and UTVs.
- Strong navigation skills using maps, compass, and GPS.
- Physical fitness to work in challenging terrain and weather conditions.
- Ability to work independently or in team settings and adapt to dynamic schedules, including overnight travel.
