About the role#
The Nursing Clinical Internship at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital provides students with hands-on experience under the guidance of a Registered Nurse mentor. You will practice at a competent level of care while assuming responsibility for your actions and patient outcomes. This is a paid, on-site role for students currently pursuing a nursing degree.
What you'll do#
- Provide direct patient care by reviewing physician prescriptions and coordinating with the healthcare team.
- Develop nursing care plans by obtaining medical histories, performing examinations, and documenting patient conditions.
- Offer physical, emotional, and spiritual support to patients and their families.
- Establish care goals and instruct patients on self-care and medication management.
- Evaluate health outcomes and adjust care plans based on changing patient needs.
- Maintain a safe environment by following infection-control policies and medication administration procedures.
- Manage patient care equipment and ensure supplies are stocked and ready for use.
- Document all services in patient and department records.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a CCNE or NLN accredited Registered Nursing program.
- Completion of all but the final one or two semesters of your nursing program.
- Ability to perform essential job functions, including effective communication.
- Visual acuity and hearing capabilities adequate to perform position duties.
Location & details#
- Location: Yankton, South Dakota.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Rotating shifts including days, evenings, nights, and weekends. Most departments follow 12-hour shifts, with some 8-hour day shifts available. Every third weekend and holiday rotation is required.
