About the role#
The Nursing Clinical Internship (NCI) at Avera McKennan provides nursing students with hands-on clinical experience. This is a 10-week paid summer internship running from May 24th to July 31st, 2027. Interns work 36 to 40 hours per week in a designated clinical area, supported by experienced RN preceptors. You will work on-site in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, across various settings including the hospital, clinics, home care, and long-term care.
What you'll do#
- Provide patient care by reviewing physician prescriptions and communicating care plans to the healthcare team.
- Offer physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients and their families.
- Develop nursing care plans by obtaining medical histories and examining patients.
- Document patient physical condition, psychological status, and social factors.
- Teach healthcare requirements and instruct patients and families on self-care and medications.
- Evaluate patient care by measuring health outcomes and modifying care plans as needed.
- Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy patient care environment by following infection-control policies.
- Manage patient care equipment and supplies to ensure they are ready for use.
- Enhance nursing capabilities through training directed by leadership and mentors.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a CCNE or NLN accredited Registered Nursing program.
- Completion of all but the final one or two semesters of your nursing program.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and team members.
- Visual acuity adequate to perform position duties.
- Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds.
- Commitment to Avera’s mission, vision, core values, and social principles.
