    About the role#

    This externship offers 3rd and 4th-year veterinary students hands-on experience in a clinic environment. You will work directly with patients, assist with procedures, and engage with pet parents under the guidance of our doctors and veterinary team. This program is designed to help you sharpen your clinical skills and explore your interests in a primary and urgent care setting.

    What you'll do#

    • Interact with pet parents and review medical records.
    • Take patient history and perform physical exams.
    • Observe the development, creation, and presentation of treatment plans and estimates.
    • Assist the treatment team with administering medications, SQ fluids, and IV fluids.
    • Place urinary catheters in male dogs and draw blood from Cephalic and Saphenous veins on stable animals.
    • Use ultrasound to identify anatomy.
    • Scrub in and assist during procedures under supervision.
    • Prepare and review ear cytology and blood smear samples.
    • Observe sample preparation for reference laboratory testing.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment in your 3rd or 4th year in an AVMA-accredited DVM program.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Strong communication skills and a willingness to learn.
    • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and perform physical tasks like bending, crouching, squatting, and carrying equipment.
    • Proof of medical insurance, rabies vaccine or titer, tetanus vaccine, and a recent TB test.
    • Commitment to upholding confidentiality standards.

    Location & details#

    • Location: Chicago, Illinois.
    • Modality: On-site.
    • Term: Rolling basis, with a minimum duration of two weeks and a maximum of three weeks.
    • Schedule: Based on school requirements and clinic availability, which may include weekends.
    • Note: This is an unpaid externship for credit. Students are responsible for their own accommodation and transportation.
