    About the role#

    This externship program offers 3rd and 4th year veterinary students hands-on experience in a clinic environment. You will work directly with patients, assist with procedures, and engage with pet parents under the guidance of our doctors and veterinary team. This program is designed to help you sharpen clinical skills and explore your professional interests.

    What you'll do#

    • Interact with pet parents and review medical records.
    • Take patient histories and perform physical exams.
    • Observe the development, creation, and presentation of treatment plans.
    • Assist the team in administering medications, SQ fluids, and IV fluids.
    • Draw blood from stable animals using Cephalic and Saphenous veins.
    • Place urinary catheters in male dogs.
    • Use ultrasound to identify anatomy.
    • Scrub in and assist during procedures under supervision.
    • Prepare and review ear cytology and blood smear samples.
    • Observe sample preparation for reference laboratory testing.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment in the 3rd or 4th year of an AVMA-accredited DVM program.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Strong communication skills and a collaborative spirit.
    • An open mind and a willingness to learn.
    • Ability to uphold confidentiality standards.
    • Physical capability to lift up to 40 pounds and perform tasks like bending, crouching, squatting, and carrying equipment.
    • Proof of medical insurance, rabies vaccine or titer, tetanus vaccine, and a recent TB test.

    • Location: Washington, District of Columbia.
    • Modality: On-site.
    • Term: Rolling.
    • Commitment: Minimum of two weeks, up to three weeks depending on school requirements.
    • Note: This is an unpaid position for academic credit. You are responsible for your own housing and transportation.
