About the role#
This internship at Lutheran Hospital offers nursing students the chance to work alongside a Registered Nurse for one 12-hour shift per week. You will gain hands-on experience in the Neuroscience Med Surg department, focusing on charting, time management, and patient assessment skills. This role is designed for students in their final year of nursing school who have completed their Pharmacology and MS 1 coursework.
What you'll do#
- Assist the nursing staff with delegated patient care services.
- Collect and record patient data, including vital signs, height, weight, oxygen saturation, intake, output, and calorie counts.
- Help patients with daily activities such as meals, bathing, grooming, oral care, and linen changes.
- Support patient mobility by assisting with positioning, ambulating, and using equipment like walkers or wheelchairs.
- Perform blood glucose monitoring and collect urine or stool samples.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment for patients and staff while following infection control protocols.
- Communicate patient information to the care team and maintain professional standards.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in the final year of a nursing program.
- Completion of Pharmacology and MS 1 courses.
- Basic Life Support (BCLS) certification within 90 days of hire.
- Up to 2 years of experience in an acute care setting is helpful but not required.
- A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT) certification is preferred.
- Ability to multitask, follow detailed instructions, and work well within a team.
