    About the role#

    The International Rescue Committee in Richmond offers an ESOL Internship for the Fall 2026 term. This role supports the Adult Education Specialist in providing English language training to refugees and immigrants. Interns help new arrivals build confidence in speaking, reading, and writing, which is essential for accessing resources and employment opportunities. This is an unpaid, on-site position.

    What you'll do#

    • Assist staff with the enrollment, coordination, and implementation of classes.
    • Contact students to confirm their availability for upcoming sessions.
    • Help students navigate barriers to education.
    • Support teachers by preparing student materials.
    • Collect data to support educational initiatives and student success.
    • Communicate with local stakeholders to connect students to classes.
    • Coordinate with volunteers and provide coverage for childcare roles as needed.

    What you'll need#

    • Current undergraduate or graduate studies in education, social work, international relations, social sciences, or a related field.
    • Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail.
    • Ability to work with patience, flexibility, and understanding.
    • Respect for and awareness of diverse global backgrounds and experiences.
    • An interest in learning about the mission and work of the IRC.
    • Proficiency in more than one language is preferred but not required.
