About the role#
The Building Construction Work-Study Assistant supports the program chair and faculty in maintaining a safe, organized, and effective laboratory learning environment. This position offers practical experience in building construction while building skills in facility maintenance, workplace safety, and professional responsibility. You will assist with routine organization, minor repairs, and monitoring laboratory activities to ensure compliance with college policies.
What you'll do#
- Organize and maintain laboratory spaces, tools, equipment, and instructional materials.
- Assist with inventory management and identify damaged or malfunctioning equipment.
- Prepare laboratory areas for classes, demonstrations, tours, and community events.
- Support the program safety culture by observing student activities and reinforcing safety expectations.
- Ensure students use appropriate personal protective equipment and follow safety procedures.
- Report unsafe conditions, accidents, or equipment concerns to faculty.
- Help with the setup and breakdown of instructional projects.
- Assist with moving and organizing construction materials.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a student at the college.
- Eligibility for student employment or Federal Work-Study funding.
- Demonstrated interest in Building Construction, Construction Technology, or a related field.
- Ability to safely use common hand and power tools.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently.
- Clear communication skills to interact with faculty, staff, and students.
- Commitment to maintaining a clean and professional laboratory environment.
- Previous coursework or experience in construction, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, or plumbing is preferred.
- Prior experience with hand tools, power tools, or workplace safety practices is a plus.

- Location: Muncie, Indiana.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Up to 20 hours per week, coordinated around your class schedule.
