About the role#
The Library Digital Accessibility Assistant joins the UVA Library Digital Accessibility Student Team to focus on either media captioning and transcription or PDF and document remediation. You will work within a small sub-team led by a Graduate Library Digital Accessibility Lead to support digital equity and information access. This is a production-focused position requiring attention to detail and consistent output.
What you'll do#
- Perform high-volume, standards-compliant production work in your assigned track.
- Create accurate captions and transcripts for Library digital media, including editing auto-generated content for timing and readability.
- Remediate PDF and document files to meet accessibility standards by correcting tags, reading order, and alt text.
- Follow established workflows, style guides, and quality benchmarks.
- Maintain accurate work logs in the team tracking system.
- Communicate proactively when questions, edge cases, or blockers arise.
- Participate in team check-ins and contribute to workflow improvements.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as an undergraduate student at UVA.
- Prior experience with captioning, transcription, or audio/video editing.
- Experience with PDF editing, document formatting, or accessibility remediation.
- Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat Pro, Microsoft Word accessibility features, or HTML and document structure concepts.
- Interest in disability studies, media accessibility, or library and information science.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of student and patron records.
Location & details#
- Location: Charlottesville, Virginia.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Compensation: $18 per hour.
- Schedule: Up to 20 hours per week, with an average of 10 to 12 hours across the semester.
- Status: Federal Work-Study eligible.
