About the role#
Xcel Energy is hiring an engineering intern to support the Substation Engineering and Design team in Denver. This role focuses on transmission and distribution substation projects. You will gain hands-on experience applying academic knowledge to real-world grid infrastructure while working alongside engineers, designers, and cross-functional teams. This is a paid position starting May 24, 2027, with the potential to extend based on performance and business needs.
What you'll do#
- Support substation design tasks including one-line diagrams, layouts, and basic calculations.
- Assist with drawing updates, design packages, and standards documentation.
- Perform basic engineering calculations and data validation.
- Participate in design reviews and coordination meetings.
- Organize and analyze project data and engineering records.
- Support site visit preparation and documentation.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an ABET accredited university as a Sophomore or higher as of Fall 2027.
- Pursuing a degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering.
- Availability to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours per week) and part-time during the school year (up to 20 hours per week).
- Ability to commute to the Denver office for hybrid work.
- Coursework in power systems or electrical engineering fundamentals such as AC circuits.
- Exposure to engineering drawings or CAD tools.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs like Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- A GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred.
- Prior internship, co-op, or relevant academic project experience.
