About the role#
As a Data Science Intern on the Algorithms team, you will build mathematical models that support the core services of the Lyft platform. You will report to a Science Manager and work on problems involving optimization, prediction, modeling, inference, and mapping. This is a full-time, paid internship for Summer 2027.
What you'll do#
- Partner with Engineers, Product Managers, and other cross-functional teams to frame problems mathematically and within the business context.
- Perform exploratory data analysis to understand problems.
- Write production modeling code and collaborate with software engineers to implement algorithms.
- Design and run simulated and live traffic experiments.
- Analyze experimental and observational data to communicate findings and facilitate launch decisions.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Masters or PhD degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Economics, or a related field.
- Graduation date between December 2027 and June 2028.
- Available for the full duration of Summer 2027.
- Experience coding in Python, along with SQL or R.
- Experience with standard data science libraries and ML tools.
- Expertise in at least one of the following: optimization and mathematical modeling, machine learning fundamentals, or probabilistic and statistical modeling.
- Experience with experimental design and analysis.

- Location: New York, New York.
- Work Modality: Hybrid. You will be expected to work in the office 3 days per week (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays).
